Sprout?

Posted by Wahid Saleemi

I found this through Digg.com. Its a story on Sprout, a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Flash editor that’s online (yay for online apps). Here’s the story:

Looks pretty nice, I didn’t catch it in time to beta test it so hopefully they’ll open it up to the public pretty soon.

On an unrelated note, I’ve been looking into getting my CCNA. I hate tests but looks like a lot of employers won’t even interview you without a certification. It’s too bad! There’s a lot of great talent out there of people who just didn’t take the tests, including MCSA/MCSE and the Cisco certifications. Speaking of Cisco… they announced their new mega switch, the Nexus 7000. It looks interesting and hopefully it will push technology for faster data transfer speeds inside a datacenter:

DotNetNuke on Linux

Posted by Wahid Saleemi

This is pretty old news for most people in the development arena, but for my friend Casto here it is. A DotNetNuke Portal running on Linux:

Pretty nice. So, I haven’t seen any posts (yet) of anyone attempting this with Windows SharePoint Services. WSS has its own challenges such as its dependence on COM and all the preconfigured path names (C:\Program Files\ etc). Maybe in time though, that challenge will also be overcome.

LinkedIn

I’ve been using LinkedIn a lot recently, its pretty nice. Its a kind of social network for professionals. I’ve been able to ‘connect’ to some IT people from the Vegas area through it. Their job search is weak for now but I like that you can leave recommendations on your coworkers, partners, and supervisors. Check it out:

Focus!

Posted by Wahid Saleemi

So, I’ve deleted most of my personal posts. There were many reasons for this but the main one is organization. Blogs should focus on something, it can be anything but it should be pretty specific. For example, “my life,” is not really specific. I decided that this blog will focus on information technology and more specifically my projects and endeavors as a sysadmin/netadmin.

The job hunt continues, I have a few leads but no offers yet which is fine with me. I’m going to spend the next couple of weeks experimenting with SharePoint on Linux. Some people say it cannot be done but I think others have done it. My computer is dual-boot so I’m going to give it a shot. If it works, I may try to install it on my public web server, that will definitely be harder but it would be a nice accomplishment. I learned in my last job that by documenting and refining the procedure we used for projects, we can make it easier to reproduce consistent results. In doing so, you lend some degree of predictability to the outcome of your project. I’ll post updates :)
